Knack Pregnancy Guide

Globe Pequot Press
publishes a line of
how-to books under
the “Knack: Make It
Easy” banner. Its
latest effort, Knack
Pregnancy Guide:
An Illustrated
Handbook for
Every Trimester, has
a strong local connection. The
author, Brenda J. Lane, lives in Arnold,
Maryland. That, of course, doesn’t qualify her to
write this book; but 20 years’ experience in the childbirth field
most certainly does. As a stay-at-home mom, Lane first started
teaching childbirth classes in the evening two decades ago so she
could be with her two little girls during the day. Occasionally,
couples would ask her to be with them at the birth as well. This
eventually led Lane to become a full-time certified doula, an assistant
who provides non-medical physical and emotional support
before, during, and right after childbirth.
Lane is also a freelance writer. Two years ago, her literary agent
approached her about writing this book. “The publishers wanted
the approach to be non-medical, but medically accurate,” she
explains. The user-friendly tome is full of helpful information for
either first-time parents or seasoned pros.
